GRADE 4 ENGLISH WRITING

Text Types and Purposes: In this section, there are three fourth-grade writing activities.

  • Opinion Pieces:
    • Introduction of the topic/text.
    • Opinion statement with organizational structure grouping related ideas to support the writer’s purpose.
    • Reasoning supported by facts and details using linking words and phrases to connect opinions and reasons.
    • Concluding statement/section
  • Informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic:
    • Introduce the topic. Group related information and include formatting, illustrations, and multimedia to facilitate comprehension.
    • Present facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or examples for topic development. Use linking words and phrases to connect the ideas within categories of information.
    • Explain the topic using precise language and domain-specific vocabulary.
    • Concluding statement/section
  • Narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences: This text type entails three parts
    • Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence.
    • Develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations by using dialogues and description.
    • Manage the coherence by using transitional words and phrases.
    • Employ power of description by using concrete words and phrases and sensory details.
    • Provide a conclusion

Production and Distribution of Writing: The three fourth- grade writing tasks, in this category, require guidance and support from adults.

  • Develop, organize, and produce clear and coherent writing according to the task, purpose, and audience.
  • Develop and strengthen writing by adequate planning, revising, and editing.
  • Produce and publish writing (using technology) to collaborate with others; demonstrate keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.

Research to Build and Present Knowledge: The three fourth- grade writing lessons, in this section, require exploration.

  • Conduct short research projects that build overall knowledge of a topic through investigation.
  • Explore print and digital sources to collect information or recall adequate information from experiences; take notes and create categories of information, and provide a list of sources.
  • Support analysis, reflection, and research by drawing evidence from texts (literary or informational), and by applying grade 4 Reading standards.

Range of Writing: This fourth grade writing activity facilitates writing facilitates for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

  • Write regularly over extended time frames (research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two).
